When it comes to decorative concrete facades in the UAE, the most frequently encountered obstacle is natural stone, which not only looks fabulous but also requires quite a bit of dead load and can’t withstand summer heat and salty air. That is where Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) comes into play. Before you start asking for GFRC panels for a facade, boundary feature, or decorative cladding project, this guide takes you through what the material is, what the typical panel thicknesses and sizes are, the reasons for the fire performance and cost discussion, and how to choose a fabricator that will not leave you with cracked panels two summers from now.
So What is GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), Anyway?
GFRC is a factory-cast composite: a cement and sand matrix that’s not reinforced with steel rebar, but with alkali-resistant (AR) glass fiber, which are dispersed throughout the mix. The fibers perform the same function as steel in conventional precast, carrying tensile and flexural loads, but the fibers are much smaller and lighter than rebar, and the panel shell can be cast a lot thinner than a conventional precast unit.
This is what makes it thin. If the thickness and weight for a conventional precast panel is to protect the embedded steel from corrosion, it moves quickly. With just about no exceptions, the GFRC eliminates that requirement, allowing a decorative facade panel or cladding skin to be cast as thin as half an inch and still maintain its form, crack-free appearance, and sculpted or textured finish.
Typically, much of the architectural GFRC is not an actual slab; it’s a thin skin overlaid on a lightweight steel stud frame, with the GFRC skin itself being reinforced by the fibers, and the frame itself being the reinforcement back to the building structure. That’s why one panel can cover up to several feet without sagging due to its own weight or the wind loads in the area.

There is a fairly consistent range of specifications to know before giving quotes to fabricators, depending on the fabricator and use, respectively, but an idea of the range is useful:

- The full depth of a panel, including the airspace and steel stud backing frame, is typically about 6–6.5 inches deep.

Fire Performance in the UAE
In the UAE, fire has a significant impact on more than almost anywhere else, and that is what makes fire performance so important.
Facade fire safety is not just a compliance box in the UAE — it’s a topic that has been given serious consideration by the industry in the wake of a series of high-rise cladding fires in the last decade that led to an increase in the requirements that authorities have put in place.
The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice issued by General Headquarters of Civil Defence now calls for separate registration, testing and certification of both the cladding supplier and the cladding system before the installation of a facade.
This is one area where GFRC (as a cladding material) has an actual structural advantage over some cladding materials.
It is not a metal composite with a plastic core, but a cementitious product, so it is inherently non-combustible and it is commonly reported to comply with the flame-spread and smoke-development testing standards for Class A / Class 1 fire ratings.
