Precast Concrete Artificial Reef Unit: A concrete unit of form in which the reef unit is cast in order to get hard surface and shelter for marine life on the sea bed. Fish and crustaceans take refuge in holes, ledges, and hollows, and corals, oysters, algae and other life forms settle on the surface. The unit is cast in a factory mould, ensuring that the shape, wall thickness and surface quality remain consistent from the first module to the last, particularly if a project involved hundreds of units.

Each reef unit is a hollowed or perforated precast reef unit with openings to several sides to allow water to pass through and animals to come and go. They are commonly in the form of domes, cubes, pyramids and stacked modules, and we mold them into the shape your marine consultant designs. Surfaces are roughened and give a texture finish as smooth concrete does not favour growth. An ocean-friendly blend of low-alkalinity cement, supplementary cementitious materials and fibre reinforcement can be used in place of the corrosive steel, as it does not corrode in water. Depending on your specification, lifting provisions are designed to facilitate the placement method, e.g. openings for slings or stainless steel lifting points. Casts can also be made in recesses for coral fragments, identification tags or monitoring markers.
